Prime Brokerage Accounts: Who Gets One, and What Traders Get Instead

14.10.2026
12m

For educational purposes only, not investment advice.

A prime brokerage account is what a bank sells to hedge funds, asset managers, and brokers: the leverage, financing, custody, clearing, and reporting behind a whole portfolio, under one agreement. Because the bank lends against that portfolio, it screens applicants by assets under management and expected revenue.

An individual trader  is not in that client group, whatever their turnover. The tier still matters to them, because a retail broker rarely holds a bank prime relationship of its own and buys its liquidity from a firm that does.

Every quote on a retail platform has passed through that firm, and the terms it gave the broker become the spread, the leverage, and the margin rules a trader sees. This article covers what a prime brokerage account includes, who prime brokers take on, how the prime-of-prime tier below them works, and where B2PRIME sits in that chain.

[[aa-key-takeaways]]

Key Takeaways

  • A prime brokerage account bundles financing, execution, clearing, custody, and reporting with one counterparty. The BIS describes prime brokerage as a service for hedge funds and other non-bank financial institutions, built around leverage.
  • Bank prime brokers screen by size. Entry floors are commonly reported in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, with negotiable terms reserved for funds holding tens of millions
  • Prime of prime is the tier below. These firms hold the bank relationships and resell access to brokers, proprietary firms, and smaller funds that banks will not take directly.
  • A trader reaches all of it indirectly, through the broker they use, and the chain shows up as pricing depth, leverage ceilings, and how margin is treated across markets.
  • B2PRIME is a prime-of-prime provider licensed through six entities. Onboarding routes to whichever entity covers the client's jurisdiction, and the CySEC and DFSA entities take professional clients only.

Broker comparison tables show spreads, instruments, and platforms. They rarely show who is quoting that spread or how the account behind it is put together, and those two facts decide what the rest of the table is worth.

What a Prime Brokerage Account Actually Includes

Everything a prime broker sells arrives as one bundle: financing and execution, then clearing, settlement, and custody, ending in a single consolidated report. Leverage sits at the center of it.

The BIS Quarterly Review (March 2024) defines prime brokerage as a service offered to hedge funds and other non-bank financial institutions, built around lending against the portfolio. The desks that provide it sit inside large banks.

Two further services explain the price of admission. Securities lending supplies the stock a fund has to borrow before it can sell short, and capital introduction puts that fund in front of prospective investors.

Margin is calculated across the whole portfolio rather than position by position, which frees capital that a per-position calculation would tie up. That is why the prime broker holds a central place in market structure while a plain execution venue does not.

Who Prime Brokers Take On

The client list runs to hedge funds, asset managers, pension and mutual funds, and brokers that need financing and clearing behind their own client flow. Size decides which of them get terms worth having.

Entry floors are commonly reported near $500,000 in equity, with negotiable terms starting closer to $50 million

 and some prime brokers screen on expected revenue instead of assets. A credit review follows, because the applicant's leveraged exposure becomes the bank's exposure.

The Two Tiers of Prime Access

Banks tightened this business after 2008. Higher capital requirements made small institutional accounts expensive to carry, minimums went up, and the clients below the new threshold were dropped.

Prime of prime grew into that gap. A prime-of-prime provider holds the bank prime relationships, then resells execution, liquidity, and financing to firms that cannot hold those relationships themselves: retail brokers, proprietary trading firms, and smaller funds.

Prime-of-prime access differs from full prime brokerage in who holds the credit line and how many hands the price passes through before it is quoted. B2PRIME operates at that tier, and so do the providers behind most retail brokers a trader is likely to use.

What the Tier Changes About Liquidity and Credit

At the bank tier, the fund borrows and the bank finances, so the credit relationship is negotiated one client at a time. At the prime-of-prime tier, the provider carries that credit and distributes access on standard terms.

Each additional link adds a party that has to be paid and a party that sets limits. That is where quoted depth, permitted leverage, and margin treatment come from by the time a price reaches a screen.

Where a Prime Broker and a Standard Broker Actually Differ

A trader never picks between the two, because only one of them will open an account for them. A prime broker's client is an institution, while a standard broker's client is the trader, and that broker itself sits below a prime-of-prime provider.

The difference that survives all the way down is scope. A prime brokerage account covers financing, execution, clearing, custody, and consolidated reporting under one agreement, whereas a standard broker offers narrower access that may take several accounts to cover the same range of markets.

Single Counterparty vs. Fragmented Broker Relationships

Concentration cuts work and adds risk, which is why institutions choose deliberately rather than by default. Hedge funds keep several prime brokers so that no single counterparty holds everything, a habit that hardened after Lehman's collapse froze client assets in 2008.

The same trade-off reaches a trader at a smaller scale. FX at one broker, crypto at another, and index CFDs at a third means three balances, three margin levels, and three sets of terms, where one multi-asset account means one of each.

Cross-Asset Margining vs. Siloed Accounts

Margin treatment is where the tiers differ most visibly. A fund gets margin calculated across its whole portfolio, a cross-collateral account nets exposures across asset classes, and siloed accounts fund every asset class separately.

Take a trader holding spot crypto at one provider and index CFDs at another. The crypto balance sits idle while the CFD account approaches its margin level, and topping up means a withdrawal, a transfer, and a deposit, in that order, which a position under pressure may not have time for.

Pooled margin removes that sequence and improves capital efficiency without touching the risk. Losses can still exceed the margin posted. In one shared pool, a loss on a single position draws on the capital behind the others.

Prime Brokerage Onboarding and What Access Costs in Time

Getting access runs in the same order at either tier: documents first, then jurisdiction, then connectivity. The clocks are what differ.

An institutional application adds corporate documents, ownership checks, credit review, and legal agreements, so weeks is a normal outcome. A retail account at a regulated broker needs personal documents and a source-of-funds declaration, which usually resolves in days.

KYC and AML Documentation Requirements

Prime brokerage onboarding verifies how the applicant is owned and controlled, which for a fund or trading company usually means:

  • certificates of incorporation and good standing;
  • the register of directors and shareholders;
  • an ownership chart up to the ultimate beneficial owners;
  • a board resolution authorizing the account.

Missing pieces are what stretch timelines, and the rules written after 2008 keep expanding what counts as a complete file. An individual applicant supplies identity documents, proof of address, and a questionnaire that establishes whether they count as a retail or a professional client.

Legal Entity Selection Based on Jurisdiction

The entity that onboards a client sets the permitted services, disclosures, and leverage limits that apply to the account. B2PRIME runs six regulated entities with published license numbers and disclosures, routing each applicant to the one that fits their location and regulatory status.

Connectivity Testing and Activation Timelines

Approval is not the same as readiness. Permissions, logins, and platform mapping still have to be set up, and B2PRIME provisions access through TradingView, cTrader, B2TRADER, and the B2PRIME App.

Clients trading through code rather than a platform login add a stage: API provisioning, permission mapping, and bridge configuration. A test pass then confirms three things before anyone calls the account active:

  • the account accepts the order types the strategy uses;
  • symbol permissions match the instruments traded;
  • margin and equity display correctly against an open position.

The Regulatory Environment Shaping Prime Brokerage Access Today

Regulation now shapes access as much as pricing or technology. The rules written after 2008 tightened leverage, collateral, and conduct requirements, which made onboarding slower and better documented at both tiers.

Anyone who opened an account several years ago will notice how much more is asked for now. Supervisors moved the same way across most major jurisdictions, leaving no provider to switch to that avoids it.

Multi-Jurisdictional Licensing and Leverage Limits

A licensing regime sets the leverage limits for FX, CFDs, and crypto derivatives traded through the licensed entity. The caps differ by asset, with crypto derivatives usually treated most conservatively.

Regulators also sort clients into retail and professional categories, and that classification decides which ceiling applies. Professional status carries higher leverage and fewer protections, and some entities take only one category: B2PRIME's CySEC and DFSA entities currently serve professional clients only.

Inside a single account, leverage is tiered by instrument group. B2PRIME's published account conditions set:

  • up to 1:500 on major and cross FX pairs, gold, and US, European, and Asia-Pacific indices;
  • up to 1:200 on exotic FX pairs, silver and other metals, crude, cryptocurrencies, non-deliverable forwards, and commodities;
  • up to 1:100 on natural gas.

A margin call comes when equity falls to 40% of the margin used, and positions are closed out at 20%. Read those levels against the strategy before funding, and position size can be planned around them. Discover them during a drawdown, and the position is already too big.

Supervisors have also been watching how non-bank providers handle leverage and margin, which the BIS Annual Economic Report (2026) calls a continuing focus of oversight. A pre-application check on leverage therefore belongs in the entity's own documentation rather than in marketing copy.

Client Fund Segregation and Asset Protection Requirements

Segregation means client money is held apart from the firm's own operating funds, usually with third-party credit institutions. European regulators set that standard out in guidance on asset segregation and custody.

It guards against misuse of client money and covers nothing beyond that. Trading losses and insolvency risk stay with the client, and the protection on offer depends on which entity legally holds the funds.

Where B2PRIME Sits in That Chain

B2PRIME is a regulated prime-of-prime provider. It holds the bank and liquidity-venue relationships, then passes execution and financing to brokers, proprietary firms, and funds that hold none of their own.

Since 2026 the group also runs a separate retail arm, which is how an individual trader can hold an account with the provider directly rather than through somebody else's broker.

Six Regulated Entities and Where Onboarding Goes

The licenses are CySEC, FSC Mauritius, FSA Seychelles, FSCA South Africa, DFSA, and SCB Bahamas. Onboarding routes to whichever entity fits a client's jurisdiction, each carrying its own permitted services, disclosures, and protections.

One Cross-Collateral Account Across FX, Commodities, and Crypto

The UNIFIED account holds foreign exchange, metals, indices, commodities, crypto spot, and crypto perpetual futures against one margin balance, where spot crypto holdings can serve as margin for CFD positions.

The crypto components run under the group's Bahamian license and reach eligible clients only. Pricing comes in two models, Raw Spread with a commission or Standard with no commission and wider spreads.

The RAW account starts from $2.50 per lot per side, which is $5 for a round turn, meaning one lot opened and closed. Comparable raw tiers else where commonly start at $3.50 per side, or $7 for the same round turn, per B2PRIME's own comparison.

Both figures cover commission only and both are indicative. Spread arrives on top at execution and moves with liquidity, the two together setting the break-even threshold a strategy has to clear.

Continuous Monitoring vs. Reactive Margin Calls

A reactive model engages only once an account has already breached a margin threshold. B2PRIME monitors exposure across open positions continuously, on infrastructure averaging around 7 ms execution latency, though fill speed varies with market conditions and connectivity.

Earlier warning may leave a client more time to adjust exposure before a forced liquidation. It removes none of the underlying risk, because leveraged positions can move faster than any monitoring response and no system can guarantee that a margin call or liquidation is avoided.

What to Weigh Before Choosing Where to Trade

Nobody outside the institutional bracket is shopping for prime brokerage itself, so four narrower questions carry the decision:

  • who is quoting the price, and at which tier of the chain;
  • which entity would onboard you, and under which regulator;
  • whether you would be classified as retail or professional, and what leverage and protections follow;
  • whether one margin balance covers every market you trade.

B2PRIME answers those with six licensed entities, a cross-collateral account across FX, commodities, crypto, and CFDs, and conditions published per instrument group.

[[aa-disclaimer]]

CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money. Crypto CFDs carry additional risks due to the high volatility of the underlying assets. Losses on leveraged products can exceed the initial deposit or margin.

FAQs about Prime Brokerage Accounts

What is a prime brokerage account and how does it work?

One broker-dealer, usually inside a large bank, provides financing, execution, clearing, settlement, custody, securities lending, and consolidated reporting to a single client. The BIS describes prime brokerage as a service for hedge funds and other non-bank financial institutions, built around leverage. Clients are funds, asset managers, and brokers rather than individuals.

Can an individual trader open a prime brokerage account?

No. Banks screen applicants by assets under management and revenue potential, with minimums commonly reported in the hundreds of thousands of dollars and negotiable terms reserved for funds holding tens of millions. What a trader opens is a broker account, so the useful question is which tier of the liquidity chain sits behind that broker.

What is the difference between prime brokerage and prime of prime?

A bank prime broker negotiates credit with each institutional client directly. A prime-of-prime provider holds those bank relationships and resells execution, liquidity, and financing on standard terms to retail brokers, proprietary firms, and smaller funds that banks will not take on.

Why does prime brokerage onboarding take so long?

Three stages drive the timeline: KYC and AML documents, entity and jurisdiction selection, and connectivity testing. Corporate documents, ownership verification, and credit review make weeks a normal outcome for an institution. A retail account runs the same order in days, with personal documents and a platform login where an institution needs a bridge configuration.

Where does B2PRIME sit in the prime brokerage chain?

B2PRIME is a prime-of-prime provider rather than a bank prime broker: it holds the liquidity relationships and resells access to them. Onboarding routes through whichever of its six regulated entities fits the jurisdiction, and the CySEC and DFSA entities currently serve professional clients only.
